Senate Republicans Vote to Hold Dr. Anthony Fauci in Contempt of Congress

Washington D.C. – Senate Republicans on the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee have voted along party lines to hold Dr. Anthony Fauci in contempt of Congress.

The action stems from Dr. Fauci’s repeated invocation of his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination during a committee hearing. During the hearing, Dr. Fauci declined to answer certain questions posed by committee members.

Committee Chairman Rand Paul stated that Dr. Fauci defied a committee order to answer questions, asserting this occurred despite a federal pardon. The committee plans to refer the contempt resolution to the Justice Department.

In response to the vote, Dr. Fauci’s lawyer issued a statement calling the action a “crude political stunt” and an abuse of power. Congressional Democrats voiced concerns that the move would set a “damaging precedent” for future witnesses appearing before congressional committees.
